Several years ago, we attended a bike fit seminar where Matt Steinmetz defined a cycling performance equation. At Sport Speed Lab, we adopted his concept, and we break it down into a simple equation:

Performance = Aerodynamics + Comfort + Power

Aerodynamics: The Free Speed Factor

  • Positioning: A well-optimized aero position reduces frontal surface area and minimizes drag.
  • Equipment: Aero helmets, deep-section wheels, and skin-tight clothing can significantly lower resistance.

However, pure aerodynamics isn’t everything. A highly aggressive position might reduce drag but could also lead to discomfort or a loss of power over long distances. That’s where the next factor comes in.

  • Training: Structured workouts focusing on endurance, strength, and interval training can boost power output.

  • Nutrition & Recovery: Proper fueling and recovery ensure consistent training and performance gains.

Maximizing power isn’t just about brute force—it’s about efficiency. A strong rider with poor aerodynamics or discomfort won’t perform as well as a balanced rider who optimizes all three factors.
